Financial Aid vs. Scholarships: What's the Difference?

'Financial aid' is the umbrella. Scholarships are one part of it. Understanding the difference helps you stack every dollar you're entitled to.

The four pillars of financial aid

Grants (need-based, free), Scholarships (merit/identity, free), Work-Study (you earn it), and Loans (you repay it). Only the first two are 'free money'.

FAFSA: the gateway

In the US, filing the FAFSA unlocks federal grants (like Pell), federal loans, work-study, and most state and institutional aid. File it as early as possible after October 1.

Scholarships sit on top

Scholarships are typically applied for separately — through universities, private organizations, or platforms like LetmeSpread. They reduce your bill regardless of FAFSA status.

How they interact

Outside scholarships may reduce other aid (loans, work-study) at some schools — usually they replace loans first, which is good. Always confirm with your financial aid office.
