How an Exchange Program Helped Roshan Jaiswal Discover Leadership, Community, and Himself

"Travel doesn't just show you new places. Sometimes, it introduces you to a version of yourself you've never met before."

When Roshan Vijaykumar Jaiswal boarded a flight to the United States as part of the Community College Initiative (CCI) Program, he wasn't simply leaving India for a semester abroad.

He was stepping into an experience that would reshape the way he viewed leadership, community, and the world around him.

Today, Roshan is known for his work in sustainability, entrepreneurship, and community development. But behind every achievement is a journey built on curiosity, service, and the courage to embrace unfamiliar experiences.

A Journey That Began with Purpose

Growing up in Mumbai, Roshan always believed that education should lead to action.

While pursuing his studies in Sociology and later Business Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, he actively worked with organizations focused on creating positive social change. From training communities on sustainable waste management to supporting small businesses and volunteering with numerous organizations, he consistently chose work that created impact beyond himself.

That commitment to service became one of the reasons he was selected for the Community College Initiative Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Little did he know that the program would become much more than an academic experience.

Learning Outside the Classroom

The United States offered Roshan something that no textbook ever could.

Every day became an opportunity to learn from people with different cultures, traditions, and perspectives.

Whether it was attending community events, collaborating with classmates from around the world, or participating in volunteer activities, each interaction challenged him to think differently.

He realized that leadership isn't about having all the answers.

It begins with listening.

Living in another country also taught him independence. Managing daily life, adapting to new environments, and navigating unfamiliar situations helped him become more confident and resilient.

Those lessons were just as valuable as anything he learned inside the classroom.

More Than Friends, A Family Away From Home

I had the privilege of experiencing part of this journey alongside Roshan.

We shared meals, explored cities, laughed through everyday moments, and learned together.

If I had to describe him in one sentence, I'd say he is one of the most positive and genuine people you'll ever meet.

Although I have to admit...

Cooking wasn't exactly his favorite activity.

Whenever it was time to prepare dinner, there was always a creative excuse to avoid the kitchen. Somehow, we still managed to survive, laugh about it, and create memories that neither of us will forget.

Looking back, those ordinary moments became some of the most meaningful.

Because exchange programs aren't only about the places you visit.

They're about the friendships that quietly become part of your life.

Service Has No Borders

One thing I always admired about Roshan was that no matter where he went, he looked for ways to contribute.

His background in environmental sustainability naturally carried into his experiences abroad.

Rather than simply being a participant, he became someone who actively engaged with communities, volunteered whenever possible, and believed that meaningful change begins with small actions.

That mindset reminded everyone around him that an exchange program isn't just about what you gain.

It's about what you give back.

A New Definition of Leadership

Watching Roshan throughout the program, I realized that leadership doesn't always come from standing at the front of a room.

Sometimes it comes from encouraging others.

Sometimes it comes from listening carefully.

Sometimes it's simply choosing kindness when nobody is watching.

These qualities aren't listed on certificates or transcripts, yet they become the ones people remember most.

The exchange program strengthened not only his professional skills but also the values that continue to guide his work today.

Carrying the Experience Forward

Today, Roshan continues working toward building stronger communities through sustainability, entrepreneurship, and volunteerism.

The lessons he brought home from the United States continue to influence how he approaches challenges, collaborates with people, and creates impact.

His story reminds us that international exchange programs are about much more than studying abroad.

They are about discovering perspectives you never imagined, building friendships that cross continents, and realizing that no matter where we come from, we all have something valuable to contribute.

A Message to Future Exchange Participants

If you're thinking about applying for an exchange program, don't do it just to travel.

Do it to challenge yourself.

Do it to meet people whose stories are completely different from your own.

Do it because growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone.

Roshan's journey is proof that one opportunity can become the beginning of a lifetime of learning.

Sometimes, the greatest destination isn't another country.

It's the person you become after returning home.
