Some people wait for opportunities to arrive. Others create opportunities for themselves and then open doors for countless others along the way.
Vaishnavi Verma belongs to the second category.
A recent Economics graduate from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, Vaishnavi has emerged as one of India's promising young voices in climate action, public policy, and youth leadership. Her journey is not simply a story of academic achievement or professional success. It is a story of how curiosity, purpose, and a willingness to step forward can transform a student's passion into meaningful impact.
Discovering a Purpose Beyond the Classroom
While many students focus solely on grades and career prospects, Vaishnavi became increasingly interested in understanding one of the defining challenges of our time: climate change.
As she studied economics, she began exploring how environmental challenges intersect with public policy, finance, and social development. She realized that climate change was not just an environmental issue but also an economic and social justice issue affecting millions of people around the world.
Rather than limiting herself to academic discussions, she decided to take action.
This led to the creation of Climate Cadets Collective (C³), a youth-led initiative dedicated to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action. Through research, workshops, educational programs, and dialogue forums, the organization empowers young people to become informed climate leaders and changemakers within their communities.
What started as an idea soon evolved into a growing movement driven by the belief that young people should not merely inherit the future but actively shape it.
Learning Beyond Borders
One of the defining moments in Vaishnavi's journey came when she was selected as an exchange participant in a U.S. Department of State program.
For many young leaders, international exchange programs become more than travel experiences. They become opportunities to see the world through a different lens.
Through the program, Vaishnavi connected with youth leaders from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and countries. She witnessed how communities across the world were addressing common challenges and discovered the power of global collaboration.
The experience broadened her perspective and strengthened her commitment to creating local solutions with a global mindset.
Her leadership journey continued as an active member of the Young South Asian Leaders Initiative (YSALI), a platform that brings together emerging leaders from across South Asia. Through YSALI, she expanded her network, exchanged ideas with changemakers from the region, and deepened her understanding of leadership in an increasingly interconnected world.
The lessons she gained from these international experiences continue to influence her work today.
Understanding How Change Happens
While many young advocates focus solely on activism, Vaishnavi understood the importance of understanding institutions and governance.
This realization led her to work with some of India's most respected policy and government institutions.
Over the years, she gained valuable experience through engagements with NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Finance, and most recently the Directorate General of Financial Planning (DGFP) at Indian Army Headquarters.
These opportunities provided her with firsthand exposure to policymaking, governance, and public administration. They helped her understand how ideas move from discussion tables to implementation and how evidence-based decision-making can create lasting impact.
For Vaishnavi, leadership meant not only advocating for change but also understanding the systems that make change possible.

Empowering the Next Generation
Leadership becomes truly meaningful when it inspires others.
As a 2024 Millennium Fellow under the United Nations Academic Impact and Millennium Campus Network, Vaishnavi launched the Climate Ambassadors Initiative, a program focused on bringing climate education to government school students.
Through workshops, awareness campaigns, and educational activities, she is helping young students understand environmental challenges and encouraging them to become responsible citizens and future leaders.
Alongside this initiative, she regularly conducts climate workshops and public lecture series that make complex environmental topics accessible to wider audiences.
Her work reflects a simple but powerful belief: meaningful change begins with education.
Multiplying Impact Through Leadership
Vaishnavi's commitment to youth empowerment extends far beyond climate action.
As an OMLAS Fellow under One Million Leaders Asia, she mentored and supported 28 emerging young leaders, helping them strengthen their leadership skills, refine their ideas, and navigate their own journeys of impact.
This experience reinforced an important lesson: true leadership is not measured by how many followers you have but by how many leaders you help create.
By investing in others, Vaishnavi has contributed to a ripple effect that extends far beyond her own projects and initiatives.
Recognition and Growing Influence
Vaishnavi's dedication and impact have not gone unnoticed.
Her perspectives on foreign policy and youth engagement have been featured on Sansad TV, offering her an opportunity to contribute to national conversations. Her climate and social impact work was also highlighted by The Better India, one of the country's leading platforms for stories of positive change.
While recognition is encouraging, it is not what drives her work.
Her focus remains on creating meaningful impact, empowering communities, and building solutions that can contribute to a more sustainable future.
Looking Ahead
Today, Vaishnavi continues her journey as a climate advocate, youth leader, and environmental economist-in-training. Her research interests in climate finance, public policy, and sustainable development reflect her commitment to finding innovative solutions to some of society's most pressing challenges.
Her story demonstrates an important truth.
Opportunities rarely change lives on their own. What changes lives is what we choose to do with those opportunities.
From becoming an exchange student and joining regional leadership networks to working with national institutions and building a global youth movement, Vaishnavi's journey is proof that when passion meets action, extraordinary things can happen.
For young people looking to create impact in their communities, her story offers a powerful reminder:
Start where you are. Learn continuously. Say yes to opportunities. And never underestimate the difference one determined individual can make.
Because leadership is not about waiting for the future.
It is about creating it.
