How One Exchange Program Changed Sukhmani's Life

For many young people growing up in underserved communities, studying abroad feels like an impossible dream. It often seems like an opportunity reserved for someone else—someone with better resources, better connections, or a different background. Sukhmani once believed the same. Growing up in Sanjay Colony, a densely populated neighborhood in South Delhi near Okhla Industrial Area, she never imagined that one day she would travel alone to the United States. Today, her journey stands as a reminder that where you begin does not determine where you can go. Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity and the courage to pursue it.

A Dream That Felt Impossible

At 24, Sukhmani balances several responsibilities. She is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Science through distance learning while working as the Center Head at Learning by Locals, where she spends her days mentoring and teaching children. Outside work, she enjoys drawing, photography, calligraphy, writing, reading books, and traveling whenever she gets the chance. She describes herself as someone who loves learning new things and experimenting with different ideas. Long before she became an exchange participant, she believed that education was more than earning a degree—it was about becoming a better person and creating opportunities for others.

The Opportunity That Changed Everything

Her journey toward the United States began with curiosity rather than certainty. She often heard teachers and seniors talk about exchange programs and the experiences they had gained while studying in America. Every story made her wonder if someone like her could ever have a similar opportunity. Encouraged by one of her teachers, she started researching the Community College Initiative Program (CCIP), a prestigious exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. She spent months improving her English, learning about the application process, and preparing herself for interviews. During the application, one question stayed with her: Why do you want to go to America? Finding the answer made her realize that she wanted more than international exposure—she wanted to grow, learn, and return home with knowledge she could share with her community.

The Moment She Will Never Forget

In July 2021, Sukhmani's dream became reality when she was selected for the Community College Initiative Program. The acceptance brought a whirlwind of emotions. She was excited, nervous, grateful, and emotional all at once. Almost everything about the journey would be a first for her. It would be her first flight, her first international trip, and her first time living away from her family. The person she called first was Pradeep Bhaiya, the teacher who had guided and encouraged her throughout the application process. Sharing that moment with someone who had believed in her from the beginning made the achievement even more meaningful.

Leaving Home for the First Time

Before leaving India, Sukhmani worried about challenges that many first-time international travelers quietly carry with them. She wondered how she would manage life alone in a foreign country, whether she would find vegetarian food, and how she would make friends among people from different cultures. These concerns felt overwhelming before her journey began. However, as the days passed in the United States, every challenge slowly became an opportunity to grow. She learned to adapt, communicate with confidence, and embrace unfamiliar situations instead of fearing them. The experience taught her that courage does not mean having no fear—it means moving forward despite it.

Discovering America Beyond the Classroom

One of the most memorable parts of her exchange experience was traveling independently across different parts of the United States. For the first time in her life, she planned her own trips, managed her own budget, booked tickets, and explored new cities without relying on anyone else. Visiting Harvard University and walking through the streets of Boston became unforgettable moments. These were places she had previously seen only in books or online. Standing there in person reminded her that dreams often feel distant until the day they become reality. Those journeys were not simply about tourism—they were moments that strengthened her confidence and independence.

Finding Confidence in Herself

The exchange program transformed Sukhmani in ways she never expected. She discovered that she was far more resilient than she had imagined. Living in a completely different country taught her flexibility, patience, and self-belief. She returned home with stronger leadership, communication, and management skills, but more importantly, she returned with confidence. She realized that no matter where she came from, she was capable of adapting to new environments, solving problems, and building meaningful relationships with people from around the world. The experience helped her see herself not just as a student, but as someone capable of creating positive change.

Giving Back to Her Community

Today, Sukhmani continues working with children and young people, determined to pass on the lessons she gained through her exchange journey. She believes that opportunities only create impact when they are shared with others. The knowledge, confidence, and experiences she gained in the United States continue to influence her work and inspire the students she mentors every day. By sharing her story, she hopes more young people from communities like hers will realize that international opportunities are not reserved for a select few. They are open to anyone who is willing to prepare, believe in themselves, and take the first step.

A Message to Every Student Dreaming Big

Looking back, Sukhmani summarizes her journey in just four words: "Explore, Learn, and Share." Her advice to students who hesitate to apply is simple but powerful: "Don't be afraid to apply. Opportunities like these may not come again. They will teach you more about yourself than you ever imagined." Her story is proof that one application can change a life, one journey can transform the way you see the world, and one opportunity can inspire countless others to dream beyond the boundaries they once believed existed.
